One-Stop Guide to Absorbency

Absorb it All

Absorbency is everything when it comes to Cloth Diapering. Finding the right combination for your family's needs can make all the difference in your diapering journey. Let us dive in and explore the different benefits of each material and how it can help you in your journey!

Material

  • Cotton: A frequently used material for inserts in the cloth diapering community as it is both natural and dependable. It absorbs moisture quickly, making it a great option for light to moderate wetters. Unfortunately, while cotton is fast-absorbing, on its own, it doesn't hold as much liquid as bamboo or hemp.

  • Bamboo: A very popular material used in inserts by many cloth diapering companies. It is both soft, flexible, and super absorbent. It often works best for moderate to heavy wetters as it holds more liquid than cotton alone.  However, bamboo does absorb slightly more slowly than cotton, and can lead to leaks if used alone for children who can flood. It is often combined with a quicker absorbing material such as cotton in either a blended fabric or in layers.
  • Hemp: One of the most trustworthy and reliable materials currently on the market when it comes to absorbency. It is able to absorb and hold a large amount of liquid, and is  perfect for those who wet heavy, or anyone needing an insert that can last for longer periods of time.  While hemp can hold more than both cotton and bamboo alone, it also absorbs liquid at a slower pace.  Because of this, it’s often found in a blended fabric with the others, or paired with a faster-absorbing material in layers to catch flooding or leaks..

The Good News?

Redwood inserts include layers and blended fabrics in  all three types  to help prevent flooding and leaks. Let’s dive deeper into the types of inserts available for you!

Insert Types

  • Cloth Wipes: Made from 2 layers of bamboo-terry fabric. They’re the perfect size to clean up any mess your baby can make for you, and also great when used as a booster! Each wipe is able to be folded in half (book fold) or tri-folded, and stuffed inside our Newborn AIO diapers. They give  you 4-6 extra layers of super-absorbent bamboo insert. Each wipe comes with a beautiful sage edging and can hold up to ~4 ounces of liquid.
  • 5-Layer Classic: The perfect choice for those light to moderate wetters! Made from  five layers of cotton, bamboo, and hemp and lined with tan Athletic Wicking Jersey (AWJ) edges. After being fully prepped, they can hold up to ~7 ounces of liquid. Some minimal baconing may occur during the prep process. This is totally normal and does not affect use in any way.
  • 6-Layer Waffle: A great option for moderate to heavy wetters/flooders! The outer layers are waffle-textured, which creates more surface area to allow for liquid to be absorbed quicker into the four inner thirsty layers of cotton, bamboo, and hemp. They are also lined with tan Athletic Wicking Jersey (AWJ) edges. Each insert can hold up to ~8 ounces of liquid, so it does go a little further between changes. Some minimal baconing may occur during the prep process. This is totally normal and does not affect use in any way.
  • 4-Layer Bifold Doubler: Here’s to all those heavy wetters! These inserts are made from 4 layers of bamboo cotton fabric so they wash and dry quickly and easily. When folded in half, you get 8 layers of super absorbency cotton and bamboo that is edged with  tan Athletic Wicking Jersey (AWJ) and can hold up to a whopping ~14 ounces of liquid. You can also pair these with  a booster to allow for a pretty solid overnight setup. As an added bonus? These do not typically  bacon during the prep process! These inserts are longer and thicker, and are best used for older children and fit best into an XL diaper.
  •  3-Layer Trifold: These trifolds are made from the same absorbent and soft bamboo-terry as the cloth wipes, and when laid flat the 3 layers wash and dry easily and quickly. When folded into thirds, the 9 super absorbent layers are flexible and squishy, for a super comfy fit for baby. These inserts are finished with those signature tan edges, and can hold up to ~14 ounces of liquid. These trifolds will not bacon during the prep process, and also do not lose any length to shrinkage. The trifolds work for small babies in an OS snapped all the way down, and also fit well into an Xl diaper. They are perfect for kids on both ends of our size spectrum
