What is PUL?
PUL stands for Polyurethane Laminate, a commonly used material in cloth diapers and most cloth diaper accessories. Here at Redwood, we use a PUL fabric that is thermally bonded, meaning it is made by bonding a polyurethane film to cloth fabric using heat and pressure rather than chemical solvents. The thermal bonding process is an environmentally friendly alternative that significantly reduces the environmental impact that chemical solvents had, and also allows for the fabric to be PFAs, PFOAs, and BPA-free. The resulting fabric is softer, stretchier, and more eco-friendly. While PUL is highly effective, it’s important to note that it is water-resistant, not waterproof. This means that it can eventually leak if the insert is fully saturated or if the PUL has sustained damage.
What Causes Damage to PUL?
The most common culprit is heat damage. High temperatures (those above 140* F) from washing and/or drying can cause the laminated layer to melt, crack, or delaminate (become separated), creating small holes that allow moisture to escape. Over time, exposure to high temps can significantly reduce the effectiveness of your diaper covers or wet bags. Harsh cleaning solutions such as bleach, vinegar, and some stain removers can also cause damage when used too often, and in concentrated amounts. When the use of bleach or vinegar is necessary, make sure to use it properly. This means using the correct dilution and concentration, and in the correct amounts for the size load of laundry you're using it for. Always make sure to use cloth diaper safe detergents and stain removers to help prolong the life of your PUL products. General wear and tear is the last major issue, but this will happen over time and is expected over the lifetime of your products.
How do you care for PUL products?
Firstly, make sure to use cleaning products that are cloth diaper friendly and will work with your water hardness levels! Next is to avoid direct heat as much as possible. Always wash on cold or warm wash settings (if you do prefer to use hot, please check the temperature of your washer adn water heater, and do not go above 140*F). Hang dry your PUL items when possible to extend the life of your diapers. When hanging them outside, do not expose the PUL layer to direct sunlight. If you cannot hang to dry, it is highly recommended to dry on tumble air, or the next lowest heat setting on your dryer. Make sure to double check the settings on your machines before washing and drying just to verify that they are being cleaned on the proper settings. Taking the care and effort to be as gentle as possible with your wash routine, preserves and extends the life of your PUL products in the most efficient way.
We offer both One Size (OS) and Extra Large (XL) options in pockets and covers, giving you flexibility to suit your baby’s size and absorbency needs.
Our pocket diapers feature an inner layer made from AWJ (Athletic Wicking Jersey). This soft, breathable fabric creates a pocket for stuffing absorbent inserts, wicks moisture away from baby’s skin for a dry feel, and offers a stay-dry surface while also holding your chosen absorbency
Covers are the outer shell made with a water-resistant PUL layer. They don’t have a built-in lining, which makes them incredibly versatile! They are commonly paired with any absorbency on the market, such as, inserts, prefolds, flats, and fitted diapers. Best of all, covers can be reused between changes as long as they’re not soiled! Just wipe down any excess moisture on the shell and add your preferred absorbency and you’re good to go!
